How to Mulch Your Garden and Flower Beds
Before applying mulch, it’s important to prepare the soil. Remove any weeds, rocks, or old mulch. If your soil is dry, water it thoroughly. For flower beds, it’s also a good idea to add a layer of compost or fertilizer to provide additional nutrients.
Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over your garden beds, making sure it’s evenly distributed. Be careful not to pile mulch against the base of plants or trees, as this can encourage rot. Leave a small gap around the stems and trunks to promote good airflow.
Mulch will settle and decompose over time, so it’s a good idea to add a fresh layer every year to keep up the benefits. Keep an eye out for weeds, and remove any that pop up. Also, monitor moisture levels in the soil, especially during dry periods.
